History Horizons: UNESCO Heritage Sites and Learning Outside the Classroom

This five-day course is designed for educators, cultural professionals, and anyone interested in integrating UNESCO World Heritage sites into the learning process. Through a combination of theoretical sessions and immersive field visits, participants will explore how cultural heritage can be effectively incorporated into education to enhance historical awareness and develop interdisciplinary teaching methods.

By joining this course, participants will not only deepen their understanding of UNESCO World Heritage and its role in education but also experience Lithuania’s rich cultural and natural diversity through an engaging and immersive learning approach.

Day 1 (Vilnius)

- Course opening

- Overview of UNESCO concepts

- Guided tour of Vilnius Old Town (UNESCO, 1994): Cathedral Square, Gediminas Castle, Vilnius University, St. Anne’s Church

- Practical assignment: integrating heritage sites into curriculum

Day 2 (Vilnius)

- Traditional Lithuanian polyphonic singing workshop (Sutartinės – UNESCO Intangible Heritage)

- Traditional belt weaving workshop (Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center)

Day 3 (Kernave (35 km / 45 min from Vilnius)

- Visit to Kernavė Archaeological Site (UNESCO, 2004)

- Exploration of hillfort complex and museum

- Workshop: Outdoor experiential learning techniques

Day 4 (Curonian Spit (360 km / 5-6 h travel)

- Visit to Curonian Spit (UNESCO, 2000)

- Nagliai Nature Reserve (Grey Dunes)

- Parnidis Dune and Sundial

- Visit to Nida’s traditional fishermen villages

- Discussion: environmental sustainability and heritage education

Day 5 (Vilnius)

- Presentation of participants' educational projects

- Group reflection and course feedback

- Awarding of Baltic Mobility and Europass certificates
